Tinder Verification: Real connections with real people powered by World ID

Mark Kantor is Chief Product Officer at Tinder. At Lift Off , Tinder announced the expansion of its World ID integration to the United States, bringing proof of human to one of the world's largest dating markets. The team sat down with Mark to discuss why trust is a product-level priority for Tinder, what the pilot in Japan revealed, and what comes next. Tinder only works if people feel like they’re actually connecting with a real human. That sounds obvious, but today’s world is shaped so heavily by AI. It’s created awesome opportunities but also real challenges. There’s synthetic content across the internet, there are bots, and it’s hard to know sometimes who is real and who isn’t. It’s absolutely critical to Tinder’s mission that every single user on the platform knows there’s a real person behind every profile they see. We’ve done a lot of work over the years, and World ID fits in as a natural extension. We’ve developed features including Photo Verification and Face Check, and we’ve seen them be incredibly successful at reducing the prevalence of bots and bad actors on the platform. But we don’t think there’s a silver bullet here. When we met with the World team and looked at the product and the roadmap, we were really excited about how it would fit into our array of safety tools. We visualize this as a trust stack, and World ID plays a role at that foundational layer, helping to prove that someone is a real human. That’s the essence of proof of human connections. Once we know that, we can layer other things on top to make sure people are who they say they are, and even to make sure they treat each other with respect on the platform. It’s been a great experience, a really great proof point. We aimed to solve a couple of important problems. We wanted to prove humanness, and we also wanted to provide our users with another method to verify age as 18+ in Japan, as required by law there. When we did the integration, I was really surprised by how seamless it was. The average time to complete the age verification flow through World is close to two minutes (versus potentially upward of 30 for our other verification method in Japan). And for people who have already been verified through World ID, it's a matter of seconds. People open Tinder like they normally do and see their top recommendations. The nice thing now is that for people who have been verified through World, when they connect their Tinder account, they’ll see a verified human badge next to their name. It sounds simple, but what it really does is remove doubt. We need real people on Tinder having fun, having conversations, figuring out what they’re going to do when they meet. We believe in the momentum and integration we’ve seen in Japan, and we’ve made the decision to expand to other countries, including the US, which is a really big deal for us. There are so many things we want to do to improve trust and authenticity on the platform, and World really has a joint mission with us. Ready to show you’re a real human on Tinder?
