Office of National Drug Control Policy Releases First Wastewater Based Drug Testing Report

WHITEHOUSE ·

This month, the Office of National Drug Control Policy released its first-ever report on Wastewater-Based Drug Testing. The Trump Administration is using new and innovative technologies like wastewater-based drug monitoring to provide near real-time data to respond to the drug crisis. Under President Trump’s leadership, drug overdose deaths continue to drop each month, and American communities are safer and healthier. This report builds on the following goals outlined in the first chapter of the 2026 National Drug Control Strategy : Leveraging wastewater testing for the first time at a national scale to obtain accurate, near real-time data on illegal drug use. Promoting the timely use of accurate data to stay ahead of emerging threats. Informing the American people about the drugs hurting their communities to address local drug threats, inform prevention and demand reduction efforts, and reduce drug trafficking and use. “Wastewater testing provides near real-time data to guide and shape a proactive approach to illicit drug threats,” said Drug Czar Sara Carter. “By implementing wastewater testing, we are identifying new drug trends and responding to them rapidly. We are delivering on President Trump’s directive to take action against emerging and deadly drug threats and save American lives.” This critical step forward to protect Americans would not be possible without the communities’ participation in the wastewater monitoring. These communities have recognized the importance of the insights generated from wastewater drug testing to improve public safety and strengthen public health in their own communities, so that their neighbors, families, and friends have an opportunity to live a drug-free life. The publication of this new data is a tool for parents, teachers, medical professionals, and law enforcement officials across the nation to have the most up-to-date information on illicit drug use in their communities. By empowering individuals across the nation to strengthen their families and communities against illicit drug use, American lives will continue to be saved.
